Berry College's student-run multimedia website, Viking Fusion, is one of the country's "50 Best Student Press Websites," according to College Media Matters.
The Top 50 list (www.collegemediamatters.com/2013/09/09/50-best-student-press-websites-2013-edition/) is compiled based on website attributes such as innovation, professionalism, content and something College Media Matters calls "millennial-generation cool." The student journalism industry blog is sponsored by Associated Collegiate Press, the largest and oldest U.S. student journalism organization.
"It really shows the dedication of our staff and advisors," said Michael Baldvins, executive director of Viking Fusion and a senior communication major from Grayson, Ga. "It's good to see all the hard work and time put in by our staff recognized outside our community."
Viking Fusion (http://vikingfusion.berry.edu) combines video, print and photography in coverage that runs the gamut from news and sports to entertainment programming produced by Viking Fusion staff and students in Berry's Department of Communication. The Viking Fusion staff comprises 26 students from across various majors.
"I feel honored to be part of a great organization and to be part of such a hard-working and creative staff," said Darren Carter, online editor and a senior communication major from Temple, Ga. "It's awesome to be in good company with large universities when we are such a small school."
Viking Fusion is one of three student press websites from Georgia on the list, along with Savannah College of Art and Design's "District" and "The Red and Black" from the University of Georgia.
"CMM's designation tells us what we already knew," said Bob Frank, chair of the department of Communication at Berry. "And that is that a lot of Berry students work really hard to consistently deliver quality content on Viking Fusion. I'm pleased to see their work recognized nationally."
The 50 sites selected are among a total student press website population of more than 4,000 from colleges and universities throughout the United States.
