Two Berry College students recently won awards
for their guitar skills at national and state competitions.
Gerrells, a freshman education major, took third place in the contemporary
division and fourth place in the traditional division at the 2013 International
Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Competition in Muhlenberg, Kentucky. And
Thomas Orr, an exercise science major, won second place in the finger-style
guitar division of the Georgia State Fair Fiddler's Convention competition.
Both are students in Adjunct Guitar Instructor Luther Enloe's class at
Berry. While Enloe's class focuses on classical guitar, students learn skills
such as technique, rigor, and attention to detail that directly relate to their
steel string finger-style playing. In this style of playing, the fingers of the
right hand are used to activate the strings as opposed to using a pick.
