University of Glasgow: Business, Law and Social Sciences
How to understand this information:
Thankfully, the US university system is
very close to the Scottish system, but there are some differences.
In the Scottish system, a student takes courses in three different areas
during his or her first two years at the university. During the
student’s third and fourth years, he or she takes classes only in his
or her specific area of study. These specialized courses are also
referred to as “Honors,” or, as the Scottish say, “Honours.” Principia
Consortium students will most likely focus on level 3 courses, while
level 1 and 2 courses are also options.
In addition to this, there are some slight terminology
discrepancies. What American universities call a “course” is analogous
to what the Scottish call a “module.” At Glasgow, a course is made
up of a series of modules. Consortium students are required to take
the Scottish Enlightenment module as well as two to four additional
modules in their major or minor, totaling 15-20 credit hours. For more
information regarding terminology, please visit Glasgow’s Glossary at www.gla.ac.uk/ibls/US/glossary.pdf
Also, the credit system is a bit different at Glasgow. There,
credits are measured in SCOTCATS. An easy way to convert SCOTCATS to
credits is to divide the SCOTCATS by four. The maximum number of
SCOTCATS that can be taken is 80, for a total of 20 semester hours,
while the minimum that can be taken is 60 Scotcats, for a total of 15
credit hours. Most of their classes will be worth 10, 20, or 30
SCOTCATS, and the required class is worth 20.
In accessing the course descriptions on moodle, some additional
information may be gathered by clicking on a course title. In some
instances you may be prompted for an enrollment key or to log in. We
do not have an enrollment key, so unfortunately we cannot access
additional information for these courses through moodle; however, it is
possible to log in as a guest. Just follow the prompts. Another
source of additional information is the University of Glasgow home page
(http://www.gla.ac.uk/). There is a
search bar located at the top right hand corner of the page. Typing
in the specific course name can sometimes yield great results.
