Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Award: Up to $30,000
Deadline: The deadline for 2012-13 has passed.  Expect a February 2014 deadline.
Eligibility: Open to juniors in the upper quarter of their class with track records in public service and leadership, who intend to enter graduate programs leading to a career in public service.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Award: Maximum of $7,500 annually for undergraduate study.
Deadline: The deadline for 2012-13 (Jan. 28, 2013) has passed.  Expect a January 2014 deadline.
Eligibility: Sophomore or junior with outstanding potential and intent to pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Must have a GPA of at least a “B” and be in the upper fourth of his or her class. U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates Award
Award: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.
Deadline: Various, depending on the specific project.
Eligibility: Undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Individual sites may have specific eligibility requirements (see http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm).

Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
(Thomas Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship)

Award: Up to $40,000 annually for tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for senior year of college and first year of graduate study. You must be in your junior year to apply.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline (Jan. 2013) has passed.  Expect a January 2014 deadline.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen in junior year of undergraduate study with a GPA of 3.2 or higher with outstanding leadership skills, academic achievement, and demonstrated financial need. Must commit to pursuing a master’s degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools participating in the program and to four years in the foreign service.

EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships
Award: Up to $19,700 per academic year, and $9,500 for a three-month summer internship.
Deadline: Competition for fellowships for undergraduate study will likely open in October 2013.
Eligibility: Rising juniors and rising seniors should apply. Must be U.S. citizen enrolled in accredited U.S. college or university with a "B" average or better.

Boren Awards for International Study
Award: Up to $20,000
Deadline: The deadline for 2012-13 applications has passed. Applicants should anticipate a Jan. 2014 internal Berry deadline and a final deadline in Feb. 2014.
Eligibility: U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East (students must have studied less commonly taught languages, but studying French and Spanish are acceptable under some circumstances).

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Award: Up to $5,000 for international study for at least 28 days during the academic year.

Rotary International
Rotary Youth Exchange

Award: Depends on where you stay and travel.
Deadline: Youth Exchange is administered locally. Chances are, Rotary clubs near you are involved in the program: There are about 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
Eligibility: 15-25 years of age; above-average student or young professional with demonstrated leadership in the community; open to new experiences and cultural differences; sponsored by a local Rotary club; completed written application and in-person interview.

Research or Study Abroad After Graduation

DAAD Study Scholarship in Germany
Award: Graduate study scholarship at a German University for one year, with a possibility of renewal, or support for independent research. Plus monthly stipend, health insurance, and travel expenses.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline has passed. Applicants should anticipate a November 2013 deadline.
Eligibility: Graduating seniors or recent graduates in all academic fields; applicants in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have good command of German.

J. William Fulbright Fellowship
Award: Living costs, book and research allowances, and round-trip transportation to host country.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline has passed.  Applicants should anticipate an internal Berry deadline in early October 2013.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen with B.A. degree or equivalent, in good health, and has sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country.

George C. Marshall Scholarship: United Kingdom
Award: University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, and other associated costs at a university in the United Kingdom.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens who hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college in the U.S. with a minimum GPA of 3.7.

Rhodes Scholarship: Oxford, United Kingdom
Award: Covers educational and living expenses for two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline has passed.  Applicants should anticipate an internal Berry deadline in late August or early September 2013.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen between the ages of 18-23 (on October 5, 2011) and earns bachelor’s degree before October 2012. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding intellectual and academic achievement (minimum 3.6 GPA), integrity of character, interest in others, leadership ability, and the energy to fully use their talents.

The Mitchell Scholars Program: Ireland
Award: One year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline has passed. Expect an internal Berry deadline of September 2013 and a final deadline in October 2013.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Award: University fees to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study in any field at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England: Research leading to the PhD degree, one-year post-graduate courses (e.g. MPhil, LLM, Diploma, CASM or Part III Maths, MBA etc.), 2 year MSc degree, second Bachelor degree as an Affiliated Student, or MBBChir Clinical Studies

Eligibility: Citizens of any country outside the UK; excellent transcripts with high GPA scores showing evidence of sustained achievement in study, together with the type of academic references which speak of the candidate's leadership potential, social commitment, intellectual ability and why further study at Cambridge is particularly appropriate.

The Belgian American Educational Foundation
Award: $25,000 for one year of study in Belgium (if less than 12 months, stipend is prorated accordingly; minimum of 6 months) and health insurance

Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and registered in a graduate program towards a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the U.S. OR registered in a graduate program in Belgium OR or hold a Master's, Ph.D., or equivalent degree. Preference is given to applicants under the age of 30 with a reading and speaking knowledge of Dutch, French, or German.

French Culture Teaching Assistant Program
Award: Teach English for 7-9 months in France. Monthly salary is $1,013 plus housing allowance.
Deadline: This year's deadline has passed. Applications for the 2014-2015 program should be available on their website autumn 2013.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or foreign nationals with a U.S. Green Card; proficiency in French.

Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship
Award: Five year fellowship valued up to $150,000 for tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credentialing program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials.
Deadline: Applications for the 2014 Fellowship open April 30, 2013, and close October 15, 2013.
Eligibility: Individuals with a B.A. in an area relevant to the subjects they plan to teach and a commitment to teaching science and math in U.S. high schools.

Award: $30,000 stipend to teach in Indiana, Michigan or Ohio and admission to a master's degree program at a participating university.

Award: $5,000 - $12,000 for first year of graduate study

Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Program
Award: $35,000 yearly stipend, $10,000 yearly tuition, and $5,000 research stipend

Eligibility: Outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences.

EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Grants
Award: Varies
Deadline: Various
Information: STAR is a grant funding program of the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) that provides grants and graduate fellowships in environmental science and engineering disciplines. STAR research is funded through Requests for Applications (RFAs) that concentrate on areas of significance to the EPA mission. STAR RFAs in the past have focused on air toxics, particulate matter, water quality, global change, ecosystem assessment and restoration, endocrine disrupting chemicals, economics and decision sciences, and nanotechnology, among others. NCER receives around 2000 proposals every year for STAR grants and fellowships and each year awards about 150 research grants and 125 graduate fellowships.

Hertz Scholarship
Award: $28,000 plus cost of education annually toward the Ph.D.
Deadline: The application process for 2012-13 is now closed. The application process for academic year 2014-15 will open in summer 2013 and the final deadline for submission will be in fall 2013.  
Eligibility: U.S. citizens and permanent residents who will have a bachelor’s degree and will pursue graduate studies in physical, biological and engineering sciences, and are willing to make skills available to the U.S. in time of national emergency. Apply as a senior.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research

Eligibility and information: For seniors and students going on to graduate school to eventually teach.  Must be a member of ISI.  Intended program of study cannot be pre-professional. ISI offers several fellowships including the Richard M. Weaver Fellowship, the Salvatori Fellowship, and the Banche Renshaw Fellowship.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship
Award: Average new award of $42,106 for tuition and stipend
Deadline: N/A -- Due to no funding there will be no Javits Fellowships this year.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students of superior academic ability who intend to pursue a doctoral or master’s degree in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences. Selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise.

James Madison Memorial Fellowship
Award: Up to $24,000.
Deadline: The 2012-13 deadline (Mar. 1, 2013) has passed.  Expect a March 2014 deadline.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who demonstrate a commitment to civic responsibilities and to professional and collegial activities and who qualify for admission with graduate standing at an accredited U.S. university that offers a qualifying master’s degree program. Applicants must be committed to teaching American history, American government, and/or social studies full time in grades 7-12.
