Minutes for April 20, 2004
I. Approval of Minutes
It was agreed that the previous minutes should be amended to reward the concerns expressed by students about Barnwell Chapel being used for the Interfaith Council.
II. Unfinished Business
- Jeff Lidke sent a letter to Dr. Colley that described the utilization of space in East Mary tat now serves as the IFC.
- Harvey Hill recommended that these reports be archived. Steven Bell said he will ask Dale McConkey to do this.
- Jeff asked a question about whether the IFC budget will be included as a regular line item in the college’s budget. Steven was not certain that this had been agreed upon.
- Mark Hopkins has not yet provided an estimate on the cost to install cabinets in the East Mary living room. Ellen is following up to spend the amount provided in this year’s budget.
- Ellen reported on her visit to the Rothko Chapel in Houston, TX. Her remarks raised questions to consider about how a new facility would be utilized by the Berry community. She expects to visit other interfaith chapels this summer.
- Gary described the process he recommends to build support to seek funding for a free standing Interfaith Chapel
- demonstrate a facility needed (i.e. because the East Mary space is heavily utilized)
- identify the needs of a facility (square footage, furnishings required, etc) to develop cost estimates.
- champioin the facility in the college-wide planning process, particularly when priorities for the next campaign begin to be discussed.
- Programming for the IFC
- David McKenzie discussed involving Shorter College. A partnership with Berry would help Shorter attract a Fulbright Scholar in religion that they are talking with, and also benefit Berry.
- Invite members of the Rome/Floyd County religious community to discuss programming with the IFC
- Post campus IFC events in Rome News-Tribune
- Increase visibility of the IFC events in campus wide announcements.
III. New Business
- Jeff Lidke agreed to serve as the new IFC chairman and was unanimously approved.
- David McKenzie closed the meeting by stating that the Council accomplished a great deal this year.
