Minutes for August 31, 2004

David McKenzie opened prayer with the hopes for a productive and spiritual year for the Interfaith Council.

Jeffrey Lidke welcomed new members to the committee.

Minutes from last spring’s meeting were unanimously approved.

Kathleen McMahan will be the official note taker for the year’s meetings.

Jeffrey brought attention to the Interfaith Council webpage located on the Religion website at berry.edu. The site will be updated weekly and will hopefully bring more attention to the IFC’s activities on campus.

A review of the IFC’s missions and goals was made by Steve.

Last year was the first full year for the IFC

We have been in the process of decorating our new location in East Mary
-
32 chairs will be available in the next two weeks (thanks, Ellen!)

3 forums on behavior with students and religion were attended last year
-
our budget stands at $1700 for furnishings and $2500 given to the IFC by President Colley at the end of last year.

300 students attended the Passion discussion last year.

Lidke thanked Steve for his leadership on the committee last year.

Lidke reviewed the events that had been planned for this coming semester.

September 9: Panel discussion on September 11, hosted by members of a number of religions.

September 14: a Native American speaker will talk about her knowledge of the Apaches. A service will follow. Will be located in Science Auditorium at 7:30.

A series of panels will be planned for this year centered around the theme of “Meet the. . .” (Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, etc).

After much deliberation, the September 11th panel will focus around the struggle for peace in the aftermath of the attacks, what lessons were learned, and how the IFC was formed as a result.

Programming Committee for this panel will be: Susan, David, Kathleen, and Steve.

Jeff reported on his visit to the Parliament of World Religions

6-7 days with representatives from major interfaith communities

Jeff found the most important thing was dialogue and networking between each other.

Photos and materials will be posted on the IFC webpage soon.

Ellen is in charge of the furniture and cabinets. Any suggestions for the facility, contact Jeff or Ellen.

Ellen said that the cabinets are locked, but keys are available in the chaplain’s office.

Cecily proposed a library of religious books so that the facility could also be an educational one.
-
Jeff and Gary will head up the publicity committee.

An IFC bulletin board is located in front of Ellen’s office on the 2nd floor of Evans.
Our next meeting will be September 21st at 4:00 in the IFC room.
