Karma and reincarnation are ancient philosophical concepts which are now of interest in the West. They relate to question such as “What happens after death?” “How should I behave in this life?” This Lecture will explain the Buddhist perspective on these concepts and questions with examples from history, sociology and current issues.

A presentation on the historical background and rituals of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah in (Saudi) Arabia that is one of the five primary duties of every Muslim. The Hajj is an annual journey that in recent years has been attended by 2 million and more Muslims from around the world. The speaker will also share his families experience performing the rite during this past December.

The Past and Future of Mayan Religion and Spirituality

Dr. Knowlton will discuss basic themes in Maya religious worldviews. These themes include concepts of God and divine spirits; the relationship between humans, the divine, and the natural world; the meanings of religious practices such as auguries and sacrifices; and Maya encounters with Christianity. Drawing on ancient texts and his own experiences with contemporary Maya religious practitioners in Guatemala, Dr. Knowlton will discuss the changes and continuities in Maya spiritualities from Prehistoric period to the present and beyond.

Sessions will be led by students of Gareth Young, an instructor from the Atlanta Soto Zen Center (ASZC) and disciple of Michael Elliston, Abbot and founder of ASZC. Gareth Young has been a disciple of Taiun Michael Elliston for three years and currently instructs the group at sessions held at a private residence in Kingston.
