Minutes for September 17

- Jeffrey opened the meeting with a few minutes of silent reflection/prayer in recognition of World Peace Day.
- Welcome to our new members! David Moskovitz, Robert Bice, and Brent.
- Minutes correction: “Dr. Thompson” should be changed to “Susan”.
- Jeffrey gave a summary of recent events:
- 9/11 Panel had 70 participants
- Inez Talamantez had over 100
- Tai Chi class has had 70
- Meditation classes begin this week
- Tom Dasher expressed his praise for a good start to the year.
- Steve gave a programming committee report:
- $300 has been granted to Anne Lewinson to bring her speaker
- “Meet the Muslims” was moved from the last to the first week in October due to Iram’s departure. If you are interested in being a moderator for this event, please contact Steve. This event has been tabled to the spring.
- Kathy McClymon is scheduled for October 5th
- “Meet the Jews” will be on November 15th
- Jeff gave a summary of our budget. We have $1500 left for the year. He encouraged us to spend it well.
- Steve suggested Joseph Chilton Pierce or Melissa Faye Green for next semester. Also, he suggested a Sader supper in the spring.
- Ellen would like to plan something for Thanksgiving
- Jeff and his wife offered a concert to celebrate Duali (the Indian New Year), which is around the same time. Wade offered to contact the Indian grill for catering. This event is tentatively scheduled as "Interfaith Thanksgiving Service" for 11 am Tuesday Nov. 23.
- Anne suggested that Iram Dilmy come to Berry as an individual speaker. Jeff stated that this was already planned and that the date will be set soon.
- Jeff added that we need to have proof that students have used the facility by the end of the year in order to gain more support for the Council.
- Decorating the Interfaith Room
- Kudos to Ellen for a great job so far!
- What should be added to the room?
- Jeff suggested a stereo
- David Fiskiss suggested a rug, Jeff stated that one was already being looked at.
- David Moskovitz suggested a TV
- With such expensive things, David stated that security will be an issue we will have to confront.
- Steve suggested an Art Contest as a way to promote the IFC and also decorate the room.
- Jeff offered a $100 prize to first place, $50 to second, and $25 to third.
- Kathleen pointed out that pictures of different faiths may deter people from using the facility.
- David Fiskis suggested displaying the artwork in Krannert.
- Brent and David Moskovitz agreed to head up a program committee for the Art Contest.
- David suggested a book drive to create a library in the IFC room.
- Bookshelves will be needed as well
- Wade suggested the bookshelves that are not being used in Cook.
- Jeff will get the prices of bookshelves from the Physical Plant
