Interfaith Council
September 3, 2009
Minutes
In attendance: Jeffrey Lidke, David McKenzie, Amy Summerlin, Judy Thompson, Ellen Johnson, Jennifer Corry
Review of minutes from April meeting – Corry motioned for minutes to be approved, McKenzie seconded.
IFC discussed the possibility of modifying by-laws for the following reasons:
1) The college Chaplain is to call the first meeting instead of the IFC chair – which seems more appropriate for the chair to call the first meeting
2) The nomination of student members of IFC are cumbersome and ideas were discussed to by-pass some of the requirements in the by-laws
a. Council proposed to eliminate requirements d and e and simplify b as required by the by-laws
b. Dr. Lidke volunteered to speak with the Provost
“Bridge” students were mentioned as possible student members to bring various cultures and increase diversity of the Council.
A call was made to elect a new Chair of IFC, and the Council unanimously re-elected Dr. Jeffrey Lidke.
The issue was raised that the Interfaith Center will have limited access due to the new policy of the dormitories being locked 24/7. This new policy will be disruptive to students who chose to worship or use the Interfaith Center for events. The Interfaith Center should have equal access as do the other chapels on campus. Gary Waters and Dean Heida were mentioned as possible contacts to avert this problem. It was suggested that we should invite them to the next meeting to discuss options.
During a review of spring programming Summerlin asked about attendance to Council sponsored events and approximate estimates of attendees were discussed:
“Yoga and Ecology,” Dr. Chapple - 30 attendees
“Places of Community, Ritual and Learning,” Dr. Virginia Troy – 25 attendees
“Science and Negative Theology,” Dr. Paul Wallce – 200 attendees
“Religion and the Copernican Revolution,” Dr. Todd Timberlake – 200 attendees
“4th Annual World Music and Dance Festival,” – 200 attendees
“The Science of the Sweat Lodge,” Tom Bluewolf – 15 attendees
