AgriEducation Tours
Our tour begins at the Dairy office. From there, groups are
moved to the tank room to discuss the following:
- Size of bulk tank in pounds and gallons,
- difference between pounds and gallons when measuring milk,
- temperature of the
tank, the milkman,
- snap test and why it’s used.
After leaving the tank room, groups will walk to
the parlor and discuss:
- type of milking system,
- number of cows in the milking
herd,
- what it’s like to be a worker,
- the leg bands our cows wear and the
- computer system that we use,
- milking protocol,
- somatic Cell Count,
- foot baths,
- pounds of milk per cow,
- dairy Breeds,
- why we milk Jerseys
- the flush, bacteria
and the importance of cleaning.
After leaving the parlor, groups will walk to the door to the adult barn
and talks about:
- why the cows are kept inside,
- what the fans do,
- how the
headlocks work,
- why they have sand beds,
- the ear tag and id system,
- how a dairy
cow produces milk,
- lactating vs. dry cows,
- gender of cows,
- what happens to
steers,
- kamars, TMR and nutrition, hay, and what it means to be a ruminant,
Groups will walk to calf barn and hear a presentation on:
- heifers, sheep and beef unit,
- electric fence, safety around the cows,
- why the calves are not with their
mothers,
- health records, horn buds,
- where boys go,
- weight and weaning.
Tour participants are allowed to pet the calves at the end of the presentation. Group tours will end back at the dairy office.
