PLUS Summer Program 2013
The PLUS Summer Program is for rising high school seniors and emphasizes SAT/ACT preparation, vocabulary building, essay writing, major/career selection along with personal development for success in college. Participants will learn to enhance presentation and speaking skills, deepen their self-knowledge through personality-style testing, and explore possible major interests. Students will experience an introductory course that helps them transition into the community and intellectual challenges of college life. The PLUS Summer Program was created to encourage high school students to pursue a post-secondary education; to provide skills needed to be successful in college; and to expose multicultural students to Berry College as an option for college.
Who can attend?
A total of 40 students will be selected for the one-week program. Rising high school seniors, who are nominated by their guidance counselor, will be invited to submit an application and to interview for the program.
What can I expect?
Before the PLUS begins in the summer, each cohort will be assigned a common reading book and this book is to be read prior arriving to campus in June. Students will participate in a book discussion centered on this reading, led by a Berry College English Professor and also in small student lead discussion groups. During the week-long program, you will be housed in one of Berry's residence halls. You will attend classes and workshops on career exploration, study skills, and preparing for and selecting a college. You will also conduct research on current topics and present them in a peer review presentation. PLUS participants will have the opportunity to interact with Berry College students, alumni, faculty and staff, and participate in campus recreational activities.
In order to be considered for the PLUS Summer Program each student must have the following:
- a written recommendation by their high school counselor
- GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale
- a completed PLUS application form
- a letter of recommendation from a teacher
- a telephone interview with the director of the program
- an original or certified copy of their high school transcript
- payment must be received by April 15th, 2013.
While we are asking for students who meet the above requirements, we are not suggesting that we are looking solely for the “top-notch” students. This program is useful for students who have the talent and capabilities but need and desire added guidance and exposure to guide them towards their ultimate goal, which is post secondary education.
The 2013 PLUS Summer Program application deadline is April 15th, 2013. All applications must be completed and received by this date. After a receipt of the completed application is received, each applicant will be interviewed via phone by the program director. Final decisions will be announced via e-mail. Final payment must be received by June 5th, 2013 to participate in the program.
- The entire cost for the PLUS Program is $275.
- The program fee includes dining, lodging, instruction and transportation/admission to educational trips.
- The student will be responsible for transportation from home to campus and the return trip home after the completion of the leadership program.
