Environmental Compliance & Sustainability

Statistics & Achievements

While continuously working towards becoming as environmentally-conscious and low-impact as possible, we have made some great strides towards achieving our goals:

Facilities  Morgan & Deerfield

  • In 2009, the Krannert Center produced about one third of Berry's overall waste. In 2010, it consisted of only one-fifth of Berry's waste make-up, despite the increase in student population
  • Although more students lived on campus in 2010 than 2009, residential halls produced only 62,483 lbs of waste, which is less than 2009's total of 68,780 lbs
  • Energy-efficient double paned windows were installed around campus
  • The heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems were retrofitted throughout most of the campus
  • The Normandy Barns are powered with geothermal energy
  • 200 motion sensor lights, 200 motion sensor thermostats, timers, and more than  100 LED lighting fixtures are installed in about a fifth of Berry’s campus
  • All residence halls are equipped with low-flow washers, shower heads, and faucets. Many buildings host dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals
  •  About 90% of the paper products used by housekeeping, including toilet paper and paper towels, are made of recycled materials

Dining

  • We purchase all our milk from local dairies
  • We purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables for our Dining Hall when possible
  • Both of our cafés sell Fair Trade coffee
  • The Berry Dining Hall has gone tray-less, reducing our water consumption by 140,000 gal and our food waste by 30%
  • The Berry Dining Hall offers biodegradable to-go boxes
  • Our cooking oil is filtered for extended life. Upon disposal, a contractor converts the oil into biodiesel.

Recycling

  • In the 2009 Recyclemania Competition, we placed 6th out of 293 in Per Capita Division
  • In the 2010 Recyclemania Competition, we placed- 11th out of 346 in Per Capita Division
  • Recycle rate jumped up 5% from 34.89% in 2009 to 39.45% in 2010. We historically rank in top 20% of all colleges.
  • Every spring, ECoS hosts E-Waste day to recycle potentially toxic electronics
  • Ink jet cartridge recycling containers are present in each building's mail room
  • After Christmas break, cell phone recycling campaigns are held to collect students' old phones.
  • 100% of all the organic debris from harvesting our timber is converted into BioMass fuel
  • The Athletics Department, with the help of the PCC, received a grant from the National Recycling Coalition for 16 special events recycle bins

Recycling

E-Conservation

  • Berry uses five server hosts to virtualize over 100 servers, which reduces energy needed to power the servers and cool the data centers
  • All new Berry Lenovo PCs and Apple computers are Energy Star compliant, EPEAT Gold certified, and are deployed with power efficient settings enabled
  • The distribution of licensed student software is now digital to reduce paper and plastic use in shipping discs to student's mailboxes and reducing unnecessary paperwork
  • Deployment of duplex-by-default laser printers in all computer labs and the library
