Barnwell Chapel

This quaint and rustic chapel was built in 1911 and named for the architect, Captain John Barnwell of Rome.

Barnwell Chapel has been used for Sunday school, Sunday evening vesper services, and summer services of the college chapel congregation. It has also been a popular site for weddings.

For a number of years, it was used as a classroom and a chapel. Classes were held in the four small rooms on each side of the chapel. The classrooms also have been used as a study hall, music studio, a library, and even as a small store. Pews built in the school shop replaced school desks in 1920. The altar, also made in the school shop, was a gift of the college class of 1951.

In February 1942 Miss Berry's body lay in state in Barnwell Chapel from Friday afternoonuntil time for her funeral on Sunday, March 1. Staff and students maintained a guard of honor.

In 1974 the Berry College Student Government Association adopted as its first Mountain Day project the refurbishing of Barnwell Chapel

A major gift made in memory of E. M. and Florence Doty, of Lima, Ohio, and Florida, by their niece, Joyce VanDerpyl Scott, of Detroit, Michigan, enabled work to begin in January, 1984, on the complete restoration and renovation of Barnwell. JTPA (Job Training Partnership Act) funds paid for training of off-campus workers working on the chapel, as well as the work performed. The project was managed and overseen by Raymond Bowen, industrial arts professor at Berry, and Fred Robinson, director of special projects and head carpenter in Berry's physical plant department. North Georgia Equipment Company installed the air-conditioning at that time. The renovation was completed in the spring of 1985, and the dedication service on May 19 made the chapel available on a year-round basis.

In 1985, Berry received the "best preservation" award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation for the work done on Barnwell Chapel.
