Ford Hall

This building, modeled after the dining hall at Christ College of Oxford, England, was under construction at the same time as Clara Hall. It was completed in 1925. Above the front entrance of the hall (also in earlier years called "The Refectory") appears the appropriate line from the Lord's Prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread."

The large stained-glass windows and majestic, highly situated beams of the interior dining area present an English cathedral effect. Among the interesting features of the interior along the top of the walls are the texts of Psalm 23 and the Lord's Prayer in Old English lettering.

The solid oak tables and chairs, which furnished the rooms from 1925 to 1978, were provided by the Fords, as were the china and silver with which to serve at that time. When the cafeteria was added at Krannert Center in 1978, Ford Hall was no longer used as a dining hall. It has been used by the drama department as an interim theater, by the music department as a band hall, and for various social functions: dances, dinners, and the like. Some of the oak tables and chairs are being used in classrooms around campus.
