Guest cottages

This cottage was built near the site of the Ford Buildings in 1916 as a residence for Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Hoge. Later it was moved to its present site, remodeled as a guest cottage and rechristened "Emily." It was formerly called Elmwood. Most of the money for remodeling was a gift of Emily Vanderbilt Hammond, of New York, whose name it bears. Mrs. Hammond was the daughter of William Douglas Sloane. Many of the furnishings in Emily Cottage are gifts of Leila Laughlin Carlisle. The Sheraton bedroom suite, however, was built by Monroe Guyton about 1932 in the Berry shops while he was instructor in industrial arts. Furnishings belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Hoge have been presented during recent years by their daughter, Mrs. Walter (Evelyn) Pendley, of Rome. Today Emily is a charming and gracious guest cottage.
