Hamrick Hall was built in 1922-23, mainly by student labor under the supervision of Grady Hamrick, to replace the classrooms in Cherokee and Pine Lodges. It was designed by architects Cooledge and Carlson, of Boston. The money for construction came from the general funds and a gift made up of many small contributions. It was first called the Foundation School Recitation Hall; in 1960 the trustees, on the recommendation of Berry President John Bertrand, designated it as H. Grady Hamrick Hall in honor of the school's first superintendent (1916-1945).
Hamrick was twice gutted by fire - in 1955 and 1972. In 1973, it was completely rebuilt and air-conditioned, with classrooms, laboratories, offices, and an auditorium named in honor of Erwin A. Holt, of Burlington, North Carolina, a long-time friend of Berry. Hamrick Hall now houses the Berry College Elementary School (kindergarten through 6th grade).
