Freemantown Barn |
|
The only remaining evidence of the Freemantown community is the cemetery located northeast of the practice track at the former Berry Academy. William Thomas Freeman, an emancipated slave of the post-Civil War era and a skilled blacksmith, started the community, which at one time included 550 acres. All of these acres were purchased by Miss Berry in 1926. It is interesting to note that "Aunt" Martha Pearl Freeman, the long-time Oak Hill housekeeper, cook, and nanny for Martha Berry, was the younger sister of William T. Freeman.
As a special United States Bicentennial project, Johnny W. Riles, III, a Berry student from Hinesville, Georgia, thoroughly researched this landmark. A copy of his research is in the Berry College archives in Memorial Library. |
