Hill Dining Hall

Hill Dining Hall was built in 1923 by students. Money came from the general fund; Cooledge and Carlson, of Boston, were the architects. In 1959 the board of trustees, on Berry President John Bertrand's recommendation, named the building for Clifford Hill, the first manager of the dining hall. Mr. Hill was one of the first students at the Foundation School, having come in 1916. He came back to Berry in 1920 and was asked to help out at the boys' school for three weeks; he stayed the rest of his life. He and Mrs. Hill occupied the rooms upstairs in the dining hall until Pilgrim Hall was completed.

The dining hall's tables for eight were built by students, and its massive stone fireplace and beamed cathedral ceilings are two of the building's most impressive features.

Hill Dining Hall was once the bakery for all the Schools' dining halls. Food is now prepared at the college and transported to the mountain campus. In 1997, Hill is used Monday through Thursday for a portion of the meals for college students at WinShape Centre and is used full time during summer camp.

Twenty log cabins were built behind Hill Dining Hall during the 1990s to accommodate participants in WinShape programs.
