Pine Lodge is the oldest building on the mountain campus. It was built in the early months of 1916 by Superintendent Grady Hamrick and the handful of boys he brought out to the old moonshiner's cabin by the spring to begin the Foundation School for the older boys who had come to Berry to learn the 3 R's as well as better agricultural methods. The school was set back at the foot of the mountain to be away from the prying eyes of the constant stream of visitors. Pine Lodge was the school in the early years. The old moonshiner's cabin served as a dining room and kitchen. Twenty-five boys could be accommodated.
Although Pine Lodge was built with bathrooms, there was no running water until a Mrs. Smythe of Cincinnati gave money for the hydraulic ram to pump water from the spring.
Pine Lodge now has four apartments and is used as guest housing. Its front lawn is the site of the annual Mountain Day Celebration on the first Saturday in October commemorating Miss Berry's birthday (October 7, 1866).
