Criteria for WAC Student Award

The WAC Awards Subcommittee will use the Student Rubric as a guide to selecting the winners of the Student Writing Across the Curriculum Award.


Criterion Superior (3) Exceptional (2) Inspiring (1)
Depth of understanding Writing assignments exhibit a full understanding of the course content. Writing assignment exhibits a firm understanding of the course content. Writing assignment exhibits an average level of understanding of the course content.
Creativity Very original presentation of material. Captures the audience's attention. Some originality apparent. Held audience's attention for most of the paper. Low level of creativity; mostly presented facts with little imagination.
Engagement Writing assignment looks beyond the scope of the problem and relates the content to the designated audience. Writing assignment attempts to look beyond the scope of the problem and relate the content to the designated audience. Writing assignment does little to look beyond the scope of the problem or relate the content to the designated audience.
Organization Thesis clearly stated and developed; specific examples are appropriate and clearly develop thesis; conclusion is clear; shows control; flows together well; good transitions; succinct but not choppy; well organized. Most information presented in a logical sequence; generally very well organized but better transitions from idea to idea needed. Concept and ideas are more loosely connected; needs better transitions; flow and organization may be a bit choppy.
