Barcelona, Spain

Spanish Studies Abroad

The Barcelona program at Spanish Studies Abroad gives students the opportunity to study in a major metropolitan center. As Spain’s second largest city, Barcelona embodies every quality of a European city. Experience the typical hustle and bustle on La Rambla, take a stroll through one of the many barrios or enjoy famous Mediterranean beaches. This urban city is host to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attracting millions of tourists each year. While studying in Barcelona, you will be able to experience everything about Catalan culture. Barcelona’s rich culture and Mediterranean climate provide activities year-round and a wide array of culinary options. Take a short trip north to Figueres to discover Costa Brava, the Salvador Dali museum, or travel south to relax on the beautiful beaches of Sitges. The city is also home to the region’s most beloved sports team, FC Barcelona.

Program of Study
The Spanish Studies Abroad Center is located at the  Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where students complete an intensive language period upon arrival. Upon completion, students will select courses in English or Spanish in either the Hispanic and European Studies Program or the Legal Studies Program. Qualified students may enroll in the Integrated Studies Program and take regular university classes in English, Spanish, or Catalan.

Living Arrangements
Berry students live with a family at a home stay, where the student becomes a part of a traditional Spanish family to explore the daily life and customs of the area. Home stays include full room and board as well as laundry and the cleaning of the student's room. The Center regularly inspects the home to ensure that it provides a warm and tranquil environment.

Students pay Berry College semester tuition and pay program fees during summer sessions. See sidebar for estimated semester budget.  Visa cost for US citizens studying longer than 90 days is $160 (price subject to change), plus transportation to the consulate to apply for the visa. Semester students may be eligible for the  Kathleen Granrose Memorial Scholarship

Students in the Spanish Studies program are required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA or, for courses in Legal Studies, a 3.3 and one semester of college-level Spanish. Students in the Integrated Studies Program are required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA in Spanish coursework and one semester of college-level Spanish. A placement test is required.

Studying in Spain for more than 90 days requires a visa, which students may apply for at the Spanish consulate in Miami or at the consulate for the jurisdiction in which they reside. Students are encouraged to make a visa appointment as soon as possible, as appointments fill early. Appointments must be scheduled through the consulate's partner,  VFS Global. At this time there is a six Euro charge for this service, but students may contact VFS for any visa question.  It is necessary for the student to submit visa documents in person at the Miami or other  Spanish consulate. Currently, there is a $160 charge for the visa. Berry College is not responsible for obtaining the visa or for visa denials.
