Harlaxton College

Lincolnshire, England

Harlaxton College is located in Grantham, Lincolnshire, in East England. Approximately a 50 minute train ride from London, the college is located in the historic Harlaxton Manor—a historic 150 room mansion built by Gregory Gregory from 1837-1845.  The manor is located on 15 acres in the rural East Midlands of England and has served as a historic military location for the British army in both world wars.

Program of Study
Harlaxton was established in 1965 as “Harlaxton Study Centre,” the study abroad location of Stanford University. William Ridgway, one of the University of Evansville’s trustees, purchased the building in 1971 to serve as the university’s British campus. He later sold the manor to the University of Evansville, and the school established Harlaxton Manor as Harlaxton College—the permanent home of its British study abroad program.

Because US students comprise the program's participants, Harlaxton offers general education classes as well as available electives in the Arts, Sciences and Humanities. In addition to these offerings, all Harlaxton students are required to take a six-credit hour course in British Studies—a challenging course that attempts to offer an interdisciplinary survey of British history and culture, explaining the formation and development of the United Kingdom as well as focusing on exploration of Britain’s national identity. This course is offered at 200, 300 and Honors levels and has been approved to fulfill Berry's 5th Humanities general education requirement. Refer to Harlaxton’s website for the college’s full semester-by-semester course catalog.

With only about 140-170 students and 15 faculty on campus per term, Harlaxton is a very close-knit environment.

Living Arrangements
All Harlaxton students live on the manor grounds, either within the manor itself or in the adjacent Carriage House. Both facilities come complete with laundry facilities, vending, and TV/lounge spaces, in addition to the refectory dining service, a health clinic, a Sports Hall, walking trails, and even a pub called The Bistro in the basement of the manor.

Students pay Berry semester tuition. Housing and meals fees for 2016-2017 are $5535 for the term. It is also suggested that students bring approximately $350 for books. See the sidebar for an estimated semester budget. Prices are subject to change, and other fees may apply.

Not required for US citizens studying less than 6 months and not working or interning. Harlaxton and University of Evansville staff work closely with students whose citizenship is other than US for visa applications.

A GPA of 2.5 or higher is recommended.
