University of Otago

New Zealand

Established in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand's first university and currently has a student population of 20,000. There are 2700 international students, 250 of whom come from the US on study abroad. Otago is one of New Zealand's most prestigious teaching and research institutions.

Students may enroll in the university directly, via Otago's study abroad program, or apply through International Studies Abroad.

The University takes its name from the province Otago, of which Dunedin is the principal city. Dunedin (population 120,000) offers students the best of both worlds. It has all the facilities, entertainment, and variety of larger cities, but is small enough to be friendly, intimate, and uncrowded. Dunedin is also an excellent gateway to Central Otago and Fiordland, where opportunities abound for hiking, surfing, skiing, water sports, adventure tourism or admiring the spectacular landscapes.

Academic Highlights
University of Otago is a comprehensive university, offering subjects in the sciences, business and humanities.  Students usually complete three or four courses (called "papers") per semester from almost any of the subjects Otago offers. Housing Arrangements
Study abroad students live in the self-catering apartments, University Flats, close to campus. Normally four to six students share a house or apartment, usually with other study abroad students.  A "Kiwi host" lives in almost all flats with the students.  Support staff are in direct communication with the International Office, ensuring student well-being.   Social activities are also organized for students throughout the semester.

Extra-curricular Activities
Otago offers over 100 different clubs and societies!  Everything from tae kwan do to belly-dancing to jewellery-making.  Volunteer opportunities are also available by contacting Otago's full-time volunteer co-ordinator.  ISA also plans excursions for their students.

Students pay the Berry College semester tuition. See side bar for an estimated budget. The student visa costs $235, but is subject to change.

Students should have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be in Junior standing.
