"The Work" by Wes Moore

wes-moore.jpgThe First-Year Common Read for 2019 is The Work by Wes Moore. Wes Moore is the Chief Executive of the Robin Hood Foundation, a non-profit focused on alleviating poverty, and founder of BridgeEdu, an organization that supports college students in transition. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Johns Hopkins University and a 2004 Rhodes Scholar, Mr. Moore is also a decorated combat veteran who served a tour of duty with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan.  He has served as a White House Fellow and special assistant to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and worked as an investment banker on Wall Street.  He is the author of four books, including The Other Wes Moore, which was the 2011 Berry College common read.

In The Work Moore traces his journey to find his life’s purpose. Moore reflects on what he learned through his education, work, and service opportunities and from numerous mentors he encountered along the way. He also tells the stories of other twenty-first-century change-makers who’ve inspired him in his search as he asks how can we live a life that matters.

All first-year students will receive the book at SOAR in June. During Viking Venture, students will join their first-year seminar classmates, instructor and mentor to discuss the book over dinner, usually in the instructor’s home. Wes Moore will deliver the Conson Wilson lecture on August 29 at 7:30 in the Cage Center Arena.
