TAKING LEADERSHIP TO THE NEXT LEVEL THROUGH  SERVICE

If you have a strong desire to lead others to serve, then you’ll find your fit with the Service Fellows Program. You’ll have opportunities to develop projects and action plans that bring about service in daily life — supporting Martha Berry’s vision of an education that brings together the head, the heart, and the hands.

As early as your first semester, you’ll get involved on the campus team or community team working with:

  • Students and student organizations to promote participation in service events and to connect volunteers with service sites
  • Local organizations to identify service opportunities for students and to engage in large-scale events
  • Staff members to implement campus-wide service days each semester
  • Other students to encourage their engagement in service (such as writing letters to first responders and creating blessings bags for the homeless)

Community partners include organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club, P.A.W.S. (Public Animal Welfare Services), William S. Davies Shelter for Men, Ruth and Naomi House (Shelter for Women), Salvation Army, Keep Rome/Floyd Beautiful and Cancer Navigators.

HOW DOES YOUR PARTICIPATION ADD VALUE TO A BERRY COLLEGE EDUCATION?

You’ll benefit from the program while living on campus, preparing for your career or graduate school and pursuing personal and professional goals after graduation because of:

  • Transferable skills developed through spearheading service projects and serving as project lead/manager researching implementing projects by developing ideas, putting together marketing plans and creating communications that raise awareness and engage student volunteers
  • A campus network of peers — often lifelong friends — for valuable connecting and support
  • A network of mentors (staff as well as community partners and connections) who will offer advice and letters of recommendation during and after college

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

The Service Fellows Scholarship is a merit-based program. The scholarship increases incrementally: first year/$3,000, second year/$4,000, third year/$5,000 and fourth year/$6,000. To be considered, you must have a track record of:

  • Above average leadership experience in high school with organizations, teams and/or projects in high school or with community organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment and initiative through service projects and experiences
  • General understanding of what it means to serve in one’s community

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT ASKED OF YOU?

  • Maintain an on-campus job including a commitment to a first-year assignment through Berry College Volunteer Services
  • Participation in program activities, co-hort meetings, and reading of a work and discussion in the context of service, vocation and society
  • Participation in campus-wide service initiatives and events
