Berry professor receives digital media grant

A Berry College communication professor is one of six faculty members in the U.S. to receive a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation Visiting Professors in Social Media Program.

Brian Carroll, professor and chair in the Department of Communication, will have the opportunity this summer to learn firsthand how news and information delivery is being transformed in a digital media world. In phase one of the program, Carroll will work at WCPO Channel 9 Cincinnati this summer. The second phase of the program brings a WCPO editor to Berry where they will work with students and faculty as well as with Viking Fusion, the student-run multimedia website.

Carroll authored “When to Stop the Cheering? The Black Press, the Black Community, and the Integration of Professional Baseball,” “A Devil's Bargain: The Black Press and Black Baseball, 1915-1960” and “Writing and Editing for Digital Media”, now in its third edition. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2003.

The program is administered by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and funded by the Scripps Howard Foundation.
