ROME, Ga. — Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum is offering free admission on Saturday (Sept. 21) as part of the annual Smithsonian Museum Day.
Museum Day allows museums, zoos and cultural centers from all 50 states to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day. The Martha Berry Museum will be open from 10 a.m. - 5p.m., and tours will be offered of the Oak Hill home at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Those wishing to attend must visit www.Smithsonian.com/museumday to download a free Museum Day ticket. One ticket is permitted per email address, and each ticket grants the ticket holder and one guest access to any participating museum on Sept. 21.
This year, Museum Day will celebrate the Smithsonian Year of Music, an institution-wide initiative celebrating the Smithsonian’s vast musical collections and resources through 365 days of music-related programming.
“Berry has a long history of music dating back to the hymns Martha Berry played on her melodeon to the earliest students, so this year’s theme of music is significant to our cultural heritage,” said Rachel McLucas, interim director and curator at Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum.
Guests will be treated to special music performed in the Oak Hill parlor as part of their tour and they will have the opportunity to view the museum’s collection of lap dulcimers.
Music is not only a reflection of human creativity and innovation, but also a key method of communication and cross-cultural exchange and understanding. The Smithsonian Year of Music crosses disciplines, bringing together music-related programming to support this initiative and highlight the world’s rich musical heritage.
The annual event goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors—it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. It represents a national commitment to access, equity and inclusion.
