New Exhibit at Moon Gallery and Talk on Nov. 1

A Berry College visiting art professor will discuss his solo exhibition, “Collect, Gather, and Assemble” at 4:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 1) in the Moon Gallery at Berry.

Dennis Ritter, a sculpture and ceramic artist, will share his artistic practice and thinking behind his clay process. The show, open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday from Oct. 28 to Nov. 22,  will feature pieces that are based in the ceramic medium, digital photography and installation.

Ritter’s ceramic work focuses on encounters with light and relationships between unrelated common objects, emphasizing that objects signify different emotions and experiences for everyone. For Ritter, clay serves as a transformative material. It creates an illusion in a permanent structure; it hides reality while revealing the precise and intentional tool marks, incidental contact and any human touch.

Ritter has earned multiple awards including the Vermont Studio Center Windgate Craft Fellowship, the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts Artist Invite Artists award and the Tyler School of Art Rudolf Award for Excellence in Ceramics. He  received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Prior to teaching ceramic classes at Berry, he was previously a ceramic teaching resident at Louisiana State University and a ceramic adjunct assistant professor at Temple University Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
