A linguistics professor will speak about the cultural aspects of communicating with Hispanic patients at 6 p.m. Nov. 13, in Room 101 of Berry College Evans Hall.
Debora Arteaga, a linguist and certified translator in the medical field, will discuss the importance of cultural awareness when communicating with Hispanic patients and the significance of understanding cultural values while interpreting. Arteaga is a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has a passion for teaching and has created many different tracks for Spanish majors, including courses specifically addressing Spanish in the medical field.
Arteaga received a M.A. in French linguistics from the University of Colorado and a doctorate in Romance linguistics from the University of Washington, specializing in historical Romance (French and Spanish) syntax.
This event is free and open to the public. Pre-med, pre-vet and language students are encouraged to attend.
