Students Garner Society of Professional Journalists Recognition

Berry College’s student-run multimedia website was named “Best Independent Online Student Publication” by the Society of Professional Journalists Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards for the third consecutive year and for the fourth time overall.

Viking Fusion has been recognized in this category for seven of the last eight years.

Berry’s campus newspaper, The Campus Carrier, was also recognized in multiple categories:

  • Taylor Corley, Winner, “Anti-mandate rally held in Rome over the weekend,” General News Photography
  • Rette Solomon, Finalist, “Berry Bees undergo expansion due to high demand,” Feature Photography
  • Sydney Kate Watson, Finalist, “’Dust Ye Shall Be’ presents spice as art,” Arts/Fashion Journalism

The awards recognize the best of collegiate journalism from a calendar year, with winners moving on to compete in the National Mark of Excellence Awards over the summer. SPJ is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. SPJ’s Region 3 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina schools.
