David James Poissant Creative Prose Reading Series

The David James Poissant Creative Prose Reading Series welcomed a New York Times Editors’ Choice author to Berry College.

The author of “The Last Karankawas”, Kimberly Garza, spoke in the College Chapel with a book signing that followed. The event was free and open to the public.

Garza is a nonfiction and fiction writer whose works have appeared in TriQuarterly, LitHub, Electric Literature, Copper Nickel, and more. Her debut novel, “The Last Karankawas”, is a fictional, multiperspective work that follows the predominately Filipino and Mexican community of Fish Village in Galveston, Texas, as they prepare for an incoming hurricane. The novel has received recognition from The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, Indie Next Pick, and Buzzfeed.

Garza earned her degrees in English, Spanish, and creative writing from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas, where she earned her Ph.D. She is currently the assistant professor of creative writing and literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The Berry lecture series was created in honor of LA Times Book Prize Finalist and Berry alum, David James Poissant.
