Berry College Symposium showcases student excellence

Berry College celebrated student innovation and academic achievement during its 26th annual Symposium on Student Scholarship, where students from across disciplines presented original research and work. The symposium provides an opportunity for students to present their research findings, celebrating student scholarships and creative endeavors across all majors. The day began with a welcome ceremony, led by Provost David Slade and Director of Undergraduate Research Kristen Diliberto-Macaluso.

Symposium consisted of many presentations from a diverse range of disciplines, such as “Fighting with our Food: The Rising Problem of Food Allergens,” “Synthesis of Cystobactamid Derivatives,” “The Sound of Signifying: Black Rhetorical Tradition through Music” and more.

Students Kaili Phillips, of Woodstock, and Edem Atsu, of Cumming, presented “Medical Misogyny, the Erosion of Trust, and the Failure of Informed Consent Prior to a Hysterectomy.”

“It was an amazing topic to share and so many people were interested in it,” Phillips said. “It was amazing to know that all the research was appreciated. If I have the chance, I would love to do the Symposium again next year.”

This year, one of the breakout sessions was the Signature Experiences Showcase. This session featured students who spoke about professional internships, volunteer work, undergraduate research and studying abroad.
