When Alex Forrand ’26 toured colleges, he prioritized a strong exercise science program and a place to play competitive soccer. “Berry was the first school where both felt like a fit,” he says. The college delivered on his expectations. Alex had a job in hand following an internship.

Alex says his classes prepared him for real-world coaching. He was excited to take courses in anatomy, physiology, and strength and conditioning that gave him the scientific foundation he needed.

“Understanding how to design training programs for different populations was huge,” he notes. “It gave me valuable baseline knowledge before I ever stepped into an internship.”

Applying classroom knowledge when training clients

After earning a certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Alex became a personal trainer for students in the Cage Athletic Center.

“I had to learn how to simplify the science and communicate clearly, especially thinking about the differences between student athletes and the regular student population,” he explains. “I also realized the power of feedback to keep people motivated. Helping people see that they’re getting stronger week by week — that’s what coaching is about.”

During his internship at a performance gym in Brookhaven, Georgia, Alex gained further experience with high school athletes, college players and clients. His preparation paid off. The owner offered him a job after graduation.

Leadership shaped by sport and community

The soccer team also positively impacted his Berry experience. Alex found a group committed to discipline, trust and shared purpose. “Freshman year especially, our group bonded quickly,” he says. “Playing with teammates who would do anything for each other teaches you leadership.”

He also found connection through the Berry Run Club, a student-led group that welcomes all fitness levels. “It is about building community,” he says. “You show up, move your body and meet people. There is no judgment.”

Ready for the next step

Down the road, Alex plans on obtaining a master’s degree in kinesiology. He’s certain about his future: “Berry equipped me with the necessary knowledge and gave me an awesome community.”
