Psychology major Macy Bennett is capping off four busy years at Berry. Leadership is a high-level skill, as demonstrated by her campus job as the director of BCC 100 instructor and mentor support. She’s also held two internships but managed to squeeze in an exciting semester at Harlaxton College, Berry’s partner institution in Grantham, England.
The value of living and learning overseas
"Studying abroad at Harlaxton was one of the most transformative experiences of my life,” Macy says. “Over the course of the semester, I traveled to six countries and explored countless places around England, with each adventure broadening my perspective and building a deeper appreciation for the world around me.”
Living at Harlaxton Manor — a historic home dating from the Victorian period — proved a highlight. Just an hour by train from London, it’s surrounded by grounds with French-style terraces, an Italian garden and English landscape walks.
“This was my first time in Europe, and amidst all my travels, the manor became my favorite place,” explains Macy. “The staff very quickly became a second family, and the friendships I built with fellow students formed lifelong bonds.”
Semester abroad at Harlaxton for first-year students
Fortunately for freshmen entering Berry in fall 2026, studying at Harlaxton is an option. The program offers a mix of U.S. and UK education and teaching styles, with classes led by American and British professors.
All Berry freshmen are mentored by an academic advisor and an upper-class Berry student. Those attending Harlaxton get the same one-on-one support. Associate Professor of History Christy Snider will serve as the academic advisor in England, assisted by a Berry student mentor.
“Studying abroad helps students to apply knowledge in real-world contexts,” notes Elizabeth Davis, director of international experiences. “They deepen understanding through immersive academic and cultural experiences, and contemplate meaning as they engage with diverse points of view.”
Berry’s semester abroad at Harlaxton is available to freshman and sophomore students.
