2019-20 LifeWorks Awards

Recipient: Jasmine “Jazz” Kirk - Carpentry
John Bertrand was president of Berry College from 1956 until 1980, and is considered the architect of the modern Berry College. Dr. Bertrand came to Berry at a difficult time as economic forces and societal changes were threatening the college’s ability to remain financially viable. Dr. Bertrand overcame numerous obstacles to transform Berry into the college we know today while at the same time continuing its traditional mission of educating the head, heart, and hands. A generous gift from his family and friends funds the outstanding supervisor award, a plaque and a check for $1,000.

Each year, the LifeWorks Office asks student workers and work supervisors to nominate supervisors who teach exemplary work skills and ethics, encourage student contributions in a manner that fosters participation and creative expression, serve as a role model and mentor, stimulate development of confidence, and give advice on personal and career interests. This year’s nominees for the Bertrand Award were: Milton Chambers, Operations Manager for Student Enterprises; Diana Haase, Residence Life Office Manager; Steve Litton, Physical Plant HVAC Technician; Erin Moniz, Assistant Chaplain; Brant Sanderlin, Public Relations Digital Assets Manager; and Jasmine “Jazz” Kirk, Carpenter.

This year’s winner is Jazz Kirk. Jazz’s nominators praised him as a role model through whom students “gain an appreciation for hard work and dedication to the job”, a teacher who gives students “opportunities to try and fail and try again”, and a mentor who shows students how to “take life’s twists and turns in stride and to always see the bright side” of every situation. One nominator summed it up this way. “It’s hard to fit a year and a half’s worth of learning, laughing, and listening into a white rectangle on a computer screen. It’s hard to put into words the impact one person can have on your life when it’s something you’ve become so accustomed to that you never really take a step back and try to quantify it. It’s hard to give enough credit to someone who’s so humble. However, there is one thing I can say with confidence; my time at Berry as well as my growth as a person have been profoundly impacted by my time working for Jazz.” Congratulations, Jazz, and thank you for all you do at Berry College and for our students!

Winfred “Chief” Moore was a student at Berry High School from 1926-1930 and then at the college from 1930-1934.  While a student he worked as Martha Berry’s chauffeur. After graduation, Chief Moore remained at Berry and worked first as an instructor in History and Science at the Boys' High School, and then in 1937 he became superintendent of grounds at the Boy’s High School. He left Berry in 1941 but returned in 1954, working until he retired. Chief Moore passed away in 1986. A generous gift from his family funds these awards, a plaque and $150 check.

From the nominations received each year, a selection committee chooses one female and one male student for the award. The award recognizes students who make major contributions to the college and their departments through their work and who model the learning outcomes of taking initiative, solving problems, contributing to the team, serving others, and being accountable and dependable.

Female Recipient: Kinsey Farmer, Director of the Academic Support Center
Kinsey is a senior History and Secondary Education major from Fort Oglethorpe, GA. She is currently the student director of the Academic Support Center, which provides tutoring services to hundreds of Berry students each semester. Kinsey supervises 60 peer tutors, desk coordinators, and office assistants. She also serves as a tutor herself. Most impressively, she was thrust into a leadership role during the winter break when she directed the effort to move the center from the basement of the library to the first floor. With only a week to go before classes, and while the director of the center was out with the flu, Kinsey ensured the move was successful and that the center was open for business on the first day of the semester. When describing Kinsey, her supervisor, Anna Sharpe, wrote, “she has served as a role model and mentor to many” and that “her work has impacted hundreds if not over a thousand students since she began working with the center in 2017.”

The other nominees were: Aubrey McFayden, Assistant Director of First-Year Experience; Victoria Millard, Director of Student Orientation; Kelsi Nichols, Student Director of the Chemistry Lab; and Anna Claire Tucker, Kinesiology Research Assistant and Nutrition Specialist.

Male Recipient: Robert (Ben) Lord, Admission Social Media Coordinator
Ben is a senior communications major from Fitzgerald, GA. He is one of the most recognizable students on campus, having directed and worked with Berry’s student-operated business enterprises for years. He has also worked in Admission for two years, recruiting applicants and giving tours. In his most recent position, Ben and his team of three students created new social media content designed to attract high school students. Observing his leadership style, Ben’s supervisor, Shira Kerce, wrote, “He is a servant leader with the ability to see where there is room for growth. I have watched as he has taken his team’s newest member, a freshman with little experience, under his wing. He has helped him find his place in the office and on the team.” In summing up Ben’s contributions to Admission, Ms. Kerce also summed up Ben’s contributions to Berry. “His passion for Berry and understanding of our brand are what makes his work so impactful. Ben will leave a legacy at Berry, and I am beyond thankful that our office was one of those lucky enough to have him as long as we did.”

The other nominees were: Antonio Brown, Chaplain’s Office Ministry Leader; James Jackson, Financial Aid Operations Specialist; Robert Newton, Dairy Student Director; and Matthew Smith, Environmental Studies Research Assistant.

Wayne Rollins was an Atlanta businessman and rancher. His family still operates successful ranches and owns the Orkin pest control company. Mr. Rollins had a keen interest in higher education and served as a Berry trustee during the 60s, 70s and 80s. He was also a major donor to the Student Work and Animal Sciences programs. His contributions as a donor and advisor are evident today at the Rollins Research Center on Rollins Road. His generosity also provided the original funding for the Dean of Student Work position and for the fencing along U.S. 27. Mr. Rollins believed strongly in the value of work as part of a college education. The following seniors and juniors received the Rollins Work Awards certificate for their employment contributions to their departments.
