Directed study and internship process

Congratulations on pursuing academic study or internship outside the United States! Students completing a Directed Study or Internship need to follow these steps to prepare for this experience:

  • Fill out the Preliminary Application on the IP Community page on Viking Web and make an appointment with the Director of International Experiences by calling 706-233-4065.
  • Complete the “Study Abroad 101” orientation on Viking Web, which you will be registered for. There is a Power Point presentation in the Resources section to read before taking the five quizzes.
  • Submit the waiver of liability Berry asks independent study students to sign. This will be e-mailed to you or given to you during your appointment.
  • Complete our form so we have your travel dates, emergency contacts and can register you for the required study abroad insurance. This policy costs $1.50 (up to age 59) per day (10 day minimum), plus $9.85/month for security evacuation and will be charged to your student account. If you are participating in a program that includes insurance, please notify Chris Borda, Director of International Experiences, by email at so that insurance is not ordered for you. However, you will still need to complete the online form so that we have your information.
  • For internships, in addition to the above, contact the Career Center to ensure that you are completing the required paperwork and a Professionalism and Internship Success workshop. See if you are qualified to apply for an internship scholarship

Once all of this has been completed, the Director of International Experiences will sign your one-stop form. You will then be charged the tuition amount by the business office. Let us know if you have any questions.
