Waste Reduction and Recycling

Berry supports a comprehensive recycling system and waste diversion partnerships. An estimated 30-40% of campus waste is diverted from landfills through recycling initiatives:

Co-Mingled Recycling

Clean paper, plastic, metal and cardboard are accepted across campus.

Dining Hall Waste Diversion

Food scraps from the salad bar are collected by students in the Eco Club and fed to animals at Mountain Mama Farms, an off-campus college partner.

E-Waste Collection

Roughly 4,900 lbs are recycled annually via Premier Surplus, including public drop-off events.

Partnerships

Berry was among the first higher education institutions in the Southeast to introduce a co-mingled system, in partnership with Moriah Services and the City of Rome.

Recycling Education

Student-led events, such as those led by students living in Berry’s Service Cottages, teach proper sorting and contamination prevention.

Yard Waste Composting

Leaves and debris are mulched and composted for campus reuse.
