While continuously working towards becoming as environmentally-conscious and low-impact as possible, we have made some great strides towards achieving our goals:

Facilities

  • In 2009, the Krannert Center produced about one third of Berry's overall waste. Now, it consisted of only one-fifth of Berry's waste make-up, despite the increase in student population
  • Energy-efficient double paned windows were installed around campus
  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems are retrofitted throughout the campus
  • Historic Normandy Barns utilize geothermal energy for climate control
  • Motion sensor lights, motion sensor thermostats, timers, and LED lighting fixtures are installed in 75% of Berry’s campus
  • All residence halls are equipped with low-flow washers, shower heads, and faucets. Many buildings have dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals
  •  About 90% of the paper products used by custodial services, including toilet paper and paper towels, are made of recycled materials

Dining

  • We purchase all our milk from local dairies
  • We purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables for our Dining Hall when possible
  • Both of our cafés sell Fair Trade coffee
  • The Berry Dining Hall has gone tray-less, reducing our water consumption by 140,000 gal and our food waste by 30%
  • The Berry Dining Hall offers biodegradable to-go boxes
  • Our cooking oil is filtered for extended life. Upon disposal, a contractor converts the oil into biodiesel.

Recycling

  • ECoS hosts E-Waste events to recycle personal electronics
  • Berry College's IT department recycles 100% of campus electronics
  • All of the organic debris on campus is converted into BioMass fuel or mulch

E-conservation

  • Berry uses five server hosts to virtualize over 100 servers, which reduces energy needed to power the servers and cool the data centers
  • All new Berry Lenovo PCs and Apple computers are Energy Star compliant, EPEAT Gold certified, and are deployed with power efficient settings enabled
  • The distribution of licensed student software is now digital to reduce paper and plastic use in shipping discs to student's mailboxes and reducing unnecessary paperwork
  • Deployment of duplex-by-default laser printers in all computer labs and the library
