Volunteer Opportunities

Why volunteer at Oak Hill?

Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum strives to share, preserve, and complement the cultural heritage and legacy of Martha Berry. This goal takes many hands and volunteering at Oak Hill is a meaningful way to contribute. Listed below are the available volunteer positions.

Volunteer Roles

Museum Greeters are often the first person someone meets when they walk into the museum! Greeters welcome guests, answer questions, and help orient them to museum galleries and spaces.

Common tasks include: answering the front desk phone, greeting and checking in guests, introducing and operating the museum's film, giving directions to guests, alerting docents about tours and guest needs, and checking out guests in the gift shop.

Hours are available Monday - Saturday in 2 to 3 hour shifts.

Docents are storytellers that share the history of Oak Hill and the legacy of Martha Berry with guests. They act as tour guides of the Oak Hill estate and the Berry Campus.

All docents also act as Museum Greeters between tours. You don't need to know anything about Martha Berry to volunteer - docent training is provided!

Hours are available Monday - Saturday in 2 to 3 hour shifts.

Community Curators contribute to the ongoing care and upkeep of our museum and its collection. This is often through "behind the scenes" work never seen by the public!

Common tasks include: processing and cataloging new artifacts in the collection, cleaning and upkeep of historic spaces, scanning or photographing artifacts, exhibition research, and responding to research inquiries from the public.

Hours are available Monday - Friday in 2 to 3 hour shifts.

Educators create a welcoming space for young learners in the museum. They assist with the planning, preparation, and facilitation of education programs and activities.

Common tasks include: assisting with field trip groups, leading an activity station at an event, helping with research and lesson planning, and prepping educational activities before an event.

Hours are available Monday - Friday (with occasional Saturday opportunities) in 2 to 4 hour shifts.

Senior Scholars Assistants contribute to the our Senior Scholars program by helping to cultivate the best possible learning experience for classes. This role is perfect for someone enrolled in a course!

Common tasks include: setting up snacks and drinks, checking the classroom set up, greeting students, and assisting with planning and preparation for each semester.

Hours are available Monday - Friday in 2 to 3 hour shifts. For those interested in assisting with a specific class, this role asks that you arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of class and that you stay for about 15 minutes afterwards.

Event Support helps to make possible all of our special events throughout the year, including Community Days, Mountain Day, Victorian Christmas Tours, and more!

Common tasks include: directing cars, greeting and checking in guests, setting up and breaking down, decorating, and serving refreshments.

Hours are available as needed, usually after 5 PM and on weekends.
