Spots are still available for the Vikings Explorations summer academic camp for gifted children in July.
Viking Explorations, held on the campus of Berry College, is a summer program for third, fourth and fifth grade private and public school gifted and talented students. The week-long program will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 15-19.
Viking Explorations will be taught by full-time Berry faculty, teachers from Berry College Elementary and Middle School, and gifted program teachers from Floyd County Schools. Children will have the opportunity to select two classes from the variety of options offered by the program. The first class will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The second class will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m.
"We welcome students to explore new and exciting learning activities on the Berry College campus this summer. We have asked some of our very best teachers in the area schools to join us in offering topics like robotics, inventions, improvisation, and ropes course leadership on the beautiful Berry College campus! Students will invent, create, act, lead and hike their way through a week-long adventure," said Jackie McDowell, Berry's Dean of Education and Human Sciences.
"As we looked at what was offered for our gifted children over the summer, we saw a void of programs here in our area," said McCall Govignon, director of advanced academic programs for Floyd County Schools. "I approached Berry College about hosting a program and their excitement about the opportunity quickly developed into Viking Explorations."
Tuition for Viking Explorations is $125. Supplies and equipment needed during the camp are included in the price along with snacks. Parents may register their children online at: http://www.berry.edu/vikingexplorations.
Classes include BOLD Outdoor Leadership, Chess Masters, Creative Writing, Hiking through History,
Summer at the Improv!, Think, Create, Invent, Math Building!, Odyssey of the Mind, Introduction into VEX Robotics,
Story Telling and Retelling and "Un Poco de Todo en Espanol" (A Bit of Everything in Spanish.)
