FRESHMAN APPLICANTS


Gate of Opportunity Scholars are chosen through a competitive application and interview process. They must also be financially eligible based on official, verified Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) results. 

To be eligible for consideration, interested high school seniors should complete the following steps: 

1.       Apply for freshman admission to Berry College (submitting all items to complete an application file) before January 15 (we encourage submitting all application items to the Office of Admissions well before this date): http://www.berry.edu/admissions/apply/ Students must be admitted to Berry for the fall term in order to be eligible for Gate of Opportunity consideration.

2.       Submit the Common Scholarship Application, which is available online by logging into Viking Web. The priority deadline is January 6, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. ETThe selection committee reserves the right to receive late applications received through January 27, 2019, but interested students are encouraged to submit the scholarship application by the priority deadline.

3.       Complete the 2019-20 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the official results sent to Berry College by January 6, 2019. Berry’s Title IV code is 001554. Families should file the 2019-20 FAFSA using 2017 tax information.

A selection committee will review complete applications and select students to participate in an interview process. We will notify all applicants in late January 2019 (by email) if they have been selected to interview or not.

An interview process will be held on the Berry College campus on Saturday, February 16, 2019 (morning through mid afternoon). Students who are unable to attend this date will have the option of a half-day interview process on Friday, February 15, 2019 or Monday, February 18, 2019 (mid-afternoon for both dates). Invited students be asked to register for the interview process. 

At least 10 students will be selected from the interview process and offered the Gate of Opportunity Scholarship as incoming freshmen. All interview candidates will be notified by in mid-March if they have been selected or not.

Selected students will have until May 1, 2019 to accept the Gate of Opportunity Scholarship offer and pay the enrollment deposit to attend Berry College.

IMPORTANT DATES - FRESHMAN APPLICANTS

2019-20 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available to complete at fafsa.gov. Families should file the 2019-20 FAFSA using 2017 tax information. Berry’s Title IV code for filing the FAFSA is 001554. Please note, it typically takes 5-7 business days for colleges to receive FAFSA results once submitted by families.

October 24, 2018
The Common Scholarship Application becomes available online at Viking Web – be sure to select “Gate of Opportunity” when submitting the application.

January 7, 2019 (11:59 pm Eastern Time)
Priority deadline to submit the Common Scholarship Application and FAFSA.

January 15, 2019

Invited candidates are encouraged to attend this interview date.

Friday, February 15, 2019 and Monday, February 19, 2019*

Half-Day Gate Interview Days (held on the Berry College campus) – morning through mid-afternoon.

*For candidates who are unable to attend Gate Interview Day on Saturday, February 16. School excuse notes will be provided for those who participate in one of the Half-Day Gate Interview Days.

Mid-March 2019
Gate of Opportunity Scholarship decisions announced.

May 1, 2019                                                                                                                       

Deadline to accept Gate of Opportunity Scholarship (for those offered the scholarship) and pay enrollment deposit to attend Berry. Selected students may also be asked to provide additional paperwork for the Office of Financial Aid by this deadline.

Early to Mid-June 2019
Attend one of the Student Orientation, Advising and Orientation (SOAR) sessions (required of all incoming Berry freshmen, including Gate Scholars). Each SOAR session takes place during weekdays and involves an overnight stay at Berry. Registration for SOAR typically begins in March (for those admitted students who have paid the enrollment deposit to attend Berry). Move-in day for all new Gate Scholars.

New Gate Scholars are encouraged to take any personal/family vacations prior to this date. 

Week of June 24 - 28, 2019
Gate Orientation activities for all new Gate Scholars.                                        
Work commitment begins for all new Gate Scholars.  

Five-week summer class (COM 203, Rhetoric & Public Address) begins for new freshman Gate Scholars.     

June 24 - August 24, 2019

Summer work commitment for all Gate Scholars.

Professional development and community-building activities take place throughout the summer.

Wednesday-Sunday, August 21-25, 2019
Viking Venture (second part of orientation for all Berry freshmen). 
Freshman Gate Scholars are excused from work to fully participate in Viking Venture activities.

Monday, August 26, 2019
Fall Semester begins for all Berry College students.
Freshman Gate Scholars begin working 16 hours per academic week.
