Bonner Center For Community Engagement

The Bonner Center for Community Engagement facilitates partnerships that:

  1. Promote community service, civic responsibility, social awareness, and academic scholarship, and
  2. Advance the college’s motto: “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”

The Bonner Center for Community Engagement is responsible for:

  • Co-curricular leadership programming that promotes the theories and practices of servant leadership and encourages civic participation.
  • The Bonner Scholars Program, a co-curricular scholarship program for students who have demonstrated active citizenship through service. The program offers students the opportunity to participate in intensive community-based work and leadership development. The program is focused on the cornerstones of civic engagement, community building, diversity, international perspective, social justice and spiritual exploration.
  • Community-based learning initiatives that offer students experiences outside the classroom, where they will have the chance to apply their knowledge from their courses directly. These initiatives help promote an understanding of how academic scholarship and service intersect with humanity.

Academic Community Engagement (ACE)

As Berry College strives to incorporate community involvement with higher education, the Bonner Center for Community Engagement has led this effort through encouraging:

  1. Classroom service-learning projects
  2. Community-based research
  3. Internships

Faculty across disciplines participate in linking academic instruction to community experience. Anecdotal evidence from students proves that these “firsthand” experiences deepen students’ understanding of the curriculum and give them confidence in the professional skills they are developing.
