English, Rhetoric, and Writing
What do you like about being an English major?
"I wish more prospective majors knew the true value of an English degree
in the business community. Not a day goes by that I don't rely on what I
learned as an English major to tackle challenges in my job and for my
customers. Yes, the math portion and some of the business terminology
may have not been the easiest thing in the world for me - others in my
department were certainly more prepared for this. But my experience has
been that every job has a variety of things like this that have to be
taught. What can't be taught are skills such as creativity, time
management, multi-tasking, communication, writing, etc. These are things
that I think come so easily to someone with an English major
background." --Joanna Griffith ('97 C)
"Being an English major doesn't just teach you about literature, but also about philosophy, history, psychology, and even life itself."–-Matt Anderson ('02 C)
"I love being able to learn about the depths of personality and thought by using literature as a source."–-Raven (Nicholle) Silva-Barton ('03 C)
"It's very applicable to life, and it teaches you to think outside the box."–-Smruti Desai ('03 C)
"The surprisingly helpful professors I've come to know as a result."–-Nathan Shepley ('03 C)
"I enjoy learning about different periods of literature and how history and culture have shaped writing. The great thing about English is that it is an outlet for ever-changing creativity and style."--Courtney Fetters ('04 C)
"To me, being an English major means being immersed in what I love. I
find so much beauty in words, and I can't think of anything else I would
rather do than surround myself with them."–-Stephanie Allen ('05 C)
