Major themes are likely to be Victorian perceptions of gender, class, immigration and imperialism.
Required Readings
Readings are likely to include Dickens' American Notes, Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton, George Gissing's The Odd Women, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh and some detective and ghost stories, as well as a selection of prose commentary by Victorian essayists.
