Pre-Law

PreLaw

Berry College students who want to pursue careers in the legal profession receive outstanding academic preparation for law school, personalized advising and support, and access to numerous resources. Students receive one-on-one assistance and mentoring from the program’s faculty to design an individualized course of study that prepares them for the rigors of a law school education. The program also gives students exposure to more than a dozen law-based courses offered at Berry College. The pre-law program at Berry College is not an academic major, though many of our students do complete the legal studies minor as part of their education. Instead, the pre-law program supplements a student’s chosen major with additional elective course work and advising. This approach, endorsed by many leading law schools around the country, emphasizes the importance of a broad, liberal arts education as the best preparation for law school.

Stellar results

Another reason we take this approach to the pre-law program at Berry College – it works! Over the past five years, Berry College graduates have been accepted to more than 80 law schools nationwide. Among the prestigious institutions on that list are Harvard University, University of Chicago, University of California-Berkeley, University of Virginia, Northwestern University, University of Texas-Austin, Notre Dame, University of Georgia and Emory University. While we cannot guarantee acceptance to any specific institution, the pre-law program’s overall acceptance rate for students applying to law school exceeds 95%.

The Berry experience

Your preparation for law school begins the moment you step on campus at Berry College. Most pre-law students meet with the pre-law advisor during their first semester to learn about the program and the resources and opportunities we make available to you. Over the next two years, students are introduced to the LSAT exam, attend presentations by guest speakers from the legal profession, meet alumni currently in law school, participate in law-related student organizations, work in legal internships, and take part in law-based classes. Select students are also given the opportunity to work with faculty on law-related research projects. Law schools do not require a specific course of study; instead students should concentrate on gaining the skills needed to succeed in law school. Typical prelaw courses include American National Government, Ancient and Modern Political Philosophy and Constitutional Law. Beginning in your junior year, you will meet with the pre-law advisor to develop a personalized study schedule in preparation for the LSAT. You will also be given guidance in preparing for the law school application process, as well as developing a list of potential law schools for your interests and abilities. The faculty of the government and international studies programs includes graduates from the University of Virginia, the University of Florida, the University of Texas and Washington University in St. Louis. Their work has been published in magazines and journals such as the American Political Science Review, Perspectives on Political Science, Review of Politics and the Journal of Politics. Creating a well-rounded student also means expanding their repertoire through extra-curricular activities. Pre-law students can join the Politics and Law Society (PALS) - a student organization that coordinates political issues debates and Constitution Day activities. The students also help sponsor nationally-recognized conferences at Berry, organize get-out-the-vote registration drives, conduct mock LSAT exams, and invite speakers to campus.

Commitment to you – commitment to excellence

The pre-law program at Berry College is an excellent supplement to the rigorous liberal arts education provided to all students at Berry. Our record of success, along with our commitment to individual mentoring, makes Berry a perfect choice for students pursuing careers in law. Come be our next great success story!
