Voluntary Service Organizations

A great way to learn about the social and political issues of a certain part of the world is through involvement with a voluntary service project. Usually privately sponsored through religious groups and nongovernmental organizations, these opportunities are available for short-term or long-term periods, dependent upon the program. Since they are voluntary, you should not expect pay for your work, but it's possible room and board will be provided.

For more information, see the following:

International Volunteer Programs Association- IVPA is a search engine for international service, allowing you to search service projects around the world by region, country, type of project, and duration.

Brethren Volunteer Service- BVS will endeavor to place you in a project where your skills are used and the need is greatest. We expect your service to contribute to the goals stated above. We see BVS as sharing God's love through acts of service.

Jesuit Volunteers International- Jesuit Volunteers serve the homeless, the unemployed, refugees, people with AIDS, the elderly, street youth, abused women and children, the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled. JVC has become the largest Catholic lay volunteer program in the country.
