Travelled to Venice, Italy, Spring 2011
I studied abroad in 2011 and on my spring
break took a trip to Venice Italy, where I captured a photograph of a gondolier
talking on his cell phone while driving his gondola. There are no cars in
Venice and gondolas are the traditional boats used. Their flat bottoms make them well suited to
conditions in the lagoon. They are one of the most iconic and romantic symbols
of Venice and what many travelers think of first when someone mentions the
centuries-old city. What they don’t think of, however, are the gondoliers in
their traditional striped shirts using modern conveniences like cell phones
while piloting their boats. This photo
represents modern Venetians and how a city that is so steeped in history has
also moved into the 21st century.
