Chapter Minutes - East Tennessee Chapter
October 18, 2008
Twenty members and guests were present for our 3rd quarterly meeting in 2008.
Everyone gathered at noon at the lovely Point Restaurant in Dandridge on Douglas Lake. The weather was beautiful, making it a perfect day to gather with Berry friends.
We were honored to have as our special guest from Berry, Frances Richey, new president of the Berry Alumni Association. Everyone was especially delighted to see Tandy Dalton, who had not been able to attend for many months due to health problems. Attending with Tandy were his daughter, Linda Dalton, and Rhonda Kirk, his healthcare aide.
We were happy to have with us Allison Conway, 84C.
The minutes of the July meeting were read and approved.
Joanna Richardson, President, brought the meeting to order. Luci Bell told us about an event which she and her Class of '60 had experienced in Washington, D.C. this summer visiting the WWII Memorial and the Arlington Cemetery. She said there were 25 present.
Joanna said Berry is challenging chapters to help fund the new Cage Center. They hope to have it fully funded by 2009. She said that one way we can contribute is to have our chapter name engraved on the back of a seat for $1,000 or have an engraving on a bench for $2,000. We can pledge over a period of three years. No decision was made at this meeting. Joanna reminded us that this is the 100th anniversary of the Berry Alumni Association, and it would be meaningful if we could do something special in recognition of this.
Joanna continued by saying that Berry has a best-kept secret in their marketing program.
She had attended a previous alumni council meeting at Berry where this was discussed. She further stated that Berry has a new marketing campaign-marketing to 16 & 17 year olds .... coming up with their own products and marketing them. Rufus Massey is now in charge of entrepreneurship, encouraging students to start a business. Students help with consulting, bookkeeping, etc.
Frances Richey stressed that we attend Founder's Day on January 21, 2009. We will be getting information on this from Berry. She urged us to have some volunteers to help with this memorable day.
Frances thanked Betty Pugh, Frances Barnett and Mary Guthrie for attending Mountain Day and assisting at the booths.
Frances also told us about visiting Dewey Large, a faithful chapter member, who is now residing in the Ben Atchley Veterans Nursing Home in West Knoxville. She said she visited him both Friday and Saturday while she was here.
Our Treasurer, Grace Johnson, was absent today due to illness. Joanna passed a basket for chapter contributions. A total of $93 was collected and will be added to our current treasury balance.
It was necessary for Tandy Dalton to leave early. In the meantime, he wanted us to know a little more about his tour of duty in the Army during WWII. He had flown combat missions during the war and had 5 brothers in service during WWII.
Joanna thanked everyone for attending and adjourned the meeting.
