The meeting on Saturday, March 10, 2007 was held at the Atlanta Bread Company in Smyrna, Georgia on 3/10/07 at 10:30.
Attending the meeting was a current Berry student Tristin Cooper, Jennifer Beard, Clarice Ford, Jennifer Williams, Brenda Thompson, Shalise Poteete, Darcel Ivy, Lynette Price, Meleisa Pollard, Terri Earls, Mignon Price, Juanita Scurry and Beverly Smith. After greetings by name and year of attendance the meeting began. Everyone appreciated the Evite that Jennifer Beard sent by email and would like to receive Evite for the next meeting announcement.
After individual introductions Junaita Scurry presided over the meeting and began the purpose of the meeting with a discussion of Homecoming and Mountain Day. Juanita read the minutes that she recorded from the last meeting at Berry College in the Ford Buildings on January 20, 2007.
Dr. Clarice Ford gave an update on the current active African American students group at Berry. Berry has provided a cultural house on campus for students to use for study and meetings. Perhaps, we will have some of our meetings there. There is also a possibility of having the gospel singing group, "In His Name" perform at some occasion. Currently there are approximately 60 African American students at Berry College.
During the discussion of goals for chapter meetings it was determined and agreed upon that the goals are basically twofold.
-Promotion of the African American scholarship to assist identified students
-Network among current African American students and alumni
These goals include planning activities serving the positive and good interest of the group. The next planning for festivities will be for Mountain Day, October 6, 7, and 8.
Juanita is still checking on the location of the scrapbook. Beverly Smith led the graduates in election of officers. Copies of the Constitution were shared with Darci Ivy reading what each officer's duty entails. Officers were elected to carry on the business of the chapter. (See the officers' page).
Criteria for the scholarship were discussed. Shalise Poteete volunteered to create a rubric with criteria for the essay selection. Juanita Scurry is going to contact Ronda Mills, the former treasurer, to get information on financial standing to give to Jennifer Williams, the newly elected treasurer. Terri Earls has volunteered to head the fundraising efforts of the group for the scholarship funding. Jennifer Beard explained how the website links the chapters. It is possible that a pay pal may be included as part of the link to the African American Alumni link. Further investigation on funding raising resources will be done by Terri Earls.
Dr. Ford will coordinate with the current Berry students to prepare for Mountain Day fellowship. The updated membership will be sent to Meleisa Pollard, who will work on membership contact information. A master list is needed with all African American alumni.
Beverly Smith has contacted Evelyn Hamilton on March 11, 2007. Evelyn Hamilton is willing to be the Regional/National Chairperson. The duties are set forth in Section 6 of the Constitution for the African American Alumni Chapter of the Berry Alumni Association.
