Organizational Information: The Home Economics Club first appears in the 1930-1931 Student Handbook. Together with the Agricultural Club, the Home Economics Club “fostered interest in country life, the country home, the rural church, the rural school, and a satisfying country life.” All home economics majors were eligible for membership. In 1969, the club changed its name to the Berry Student Home Economics Association (BSHEA). During the 1994-1995 school year, the home economics major was subsumed under the Family and Consumer Sciences Department. The club last appears in the 1996 college yearbook. Family and Consumer Sciences was dissolved as a major in 1999 and currently is only available as a minor.
Description: Yearbooks contain information about the club motto, colors, goals, and constitution, as well as chapter, state and local officers. They also include lists of the club meetings and programs for the lectures and activities sponsored by the club. Some examples include readings on homemaking and parental education. Other information regarding the club can be found in the Vertical File under the heading Student Activities—Home Economics Club and Student Activities—Agriculture Club. The Berry Collection also contains numerous Home Economics Club and Berry Student Home Economics Association Club scrapbooks from 1935 to 1991, which more fully detail the activities of the club. The Home Economics Club Scrapbooks were removed from the collection and are housed in the Berry College Archives Scrapbook collection.
